Dengue

 

Dengue fever is common among students or employees, where the cause is because they ignore hygiene in workplace. Information about dengue fever is important, so that cases involving dengue fever among students and staff can be reduced. Dengue is a mosquito-borne infection found in tropical and sub-tropical regions around the world. Each year, an estimated 100 million cases of dengue fever occur worldwide. Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus.

Symptoms of Dengue

 

The symptoms usually develop within 4-7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Symptoms of classic dengue include:

​

1) High fever (up to 40.6 C)

 

2) Severe headache with retro-orbital (behind the eye) pain

 

3) Severe joint and muscle pain

 

4) Nausea and vomiting

 

5) Body rash which appears on day 3 or 4.

​

 

Prevent of Dengue Virus

 

At present, the only method to control or prevent the transmission of dengue virus is to combat vector mosquitoes through:

 

1) Preventing mosquitoes from accessing egg-laying habitats by environmental management and modification

 

2) Disposing of solid waste properly and removing artificial man-made habitats

 

3) Covering, emptying and cleaning of domestic water storage containers on a weekly basis

 

4) Applying appropriate insecticides to water storage outdoor containers

 

5) Using of personal household protection such as window screens, long-sleeved clothes, insecticide treated        materials, coils and vaporizers

 

6) Improving community participation and mobilsation for sustained vector control

 

7) Applying insecticides as space spraying during outbreaks as one of the emergency vector control measures

 

8) Active monitoring and surveillance of vectors should be carried out to determine effectiveness of control         interventions.

Treatment for Dengue Fever

 

There is no specific treatment for dengue fever and most people recover within 2 weeks. To help with recovery, general measures include:

 

1) Getting plenty of bed rest

 

2) Drinking lots of fluids.

 

Taking medicine to reduce fever. Avoid aspirin but paracetamol is considered safe. For severe dengue symptoms including shock and coma, hospitalization and aggressive emergency treatment with fluid and electrolyte replacement may be necessary to save lives.
